As new technology continues to develop and cellphones become more popular than ever, streaming services have made their way into the homes and hands of people across the United States. Years ago, digital media primarily came from DVDs or VHS tapes. Movie theaters also grew in popularity, attracting fans and critics alike to enjoy new releases on the big screen. Today, streaming services like Max, Hulu and Disney+ have transformed the way people watch movies.
One of the first streaming services ever created was YouTube, which launched in 2005. It was initially founded as a platform to upload and share videos globally. In 2007, Netflix, which had originally launched as a DVD rental service in 1997, shifted its focus to streaming movies and TV shows.
Johnny Rubio (12) said he prefers streaming services over DVDs because of their convenience and accessibility.
“I like streaming services because they provide easy access to a variety of shows and TV, whereas DVDs don’t have a huge selection and are limited to very few options. Streaming services are more portable and can be viewed practically anywhere, while DVDs are not as portable,” Rubio said.
While streaming services allow viewers to easily access their favorite movies and watch them repeatedly, they have also changed how movies are released in theaters. Instead of heading to a local theater to watch a new movie, viewers can now choose to wait for it to become available on a streaming platform. This shift has contributed to declining attendance at movie theaters across the country.
According to the Motion Picture Association, streaming’s availability and affordability make it a more appealing option for movie fans who prefer to stay in the comfort of their own homes.
“The rise of streaming services has led to a decline in theater attendance. According to the Motion Picture Association, global theater attendance dropped by 4% in 2021, partly due to the availability of films on streaming platforms. The convenience and affordability of streaming services have attracted viewers to opt for at-home entertainment,” the Motion Picture Association reported.
Streaming platforms not only provide access to classic films released in theaters years ago, but they also produce original series and movies. Shows like Netflix’s “Outer Banks” and Max’s “The White Lotus” have gained massive popularity. Instead of tuning in to traditional TV at a set time, viewers can now watch their favorite shows and movies whenever they choose.
Teagan McEnroe (12) said she prefers watching movies at home with her family rather than going to a theater.
“I would much rather watch a movie or show on my phone instead of going to the movie theater. If my whole family wants to watch a movie together, it’s much easier to find one on Netflix or Hulu rather than going out. Also, finding a movie on a streaming service is easier than deciding on one that’s playing in theaters,” McEnroe said.
