To celebrate Women’s History Month at Spartanburg High School, Girls United planned events to honor and raise awareness throughout March. This year, the club focused on the global theme of “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”
Students also participated in a Women’s History Month course on Schoology. In this group, students competed in trivia each morning, with winners receiving prizes. The group code to join the Schoology group, along with information about other Women’s History Month events, was shared all month in the morning announcements via email.
Faryn Cox (11) is a proud member of Girls United and spoke about her experience in the organization.
“It has taught me the importance of believing in yourself and empowering others in the community. I’m proud to be a part of Girls United and make a positive impact in the world. I’m excited to see what the program holds for me in the future,” Cox said.
Girls United created two calendars to celebrate the month. One highlighted girls’ sporting events to encourage support and recognize athletic accomplishments. The other calendar featured daily events at Spartanburg High School, including dress-up days and bake sales. Many Girls United members also participated in a panel discussion celebrating women’s history on March 18, held at Spartanburg Community College and sponsored by Delta Kappa Gamma, Eta Chapter.
Throughout March, a total of 16 Walks for Women took place after school in the arena. During these walks, students and teachers were invited to participate and honor the outstanding women in their lives.
Tally Pruett, who teaches honors women’s literature at Spartanburg High School and serves as the Girls United instructor, shared her reason for participating.
“We walk in solidarity to celebrate their courage and strength. I walk for my sister-in-law, who defeated brain cancer and is in the recovery process from her fight,” Pruett said.
Dress-up days occurred each Wednesday in March, with themes including women in business, women in government, women in medicine and teacher matching day. These themed days offered students and faculty a chance to honor women in history, celebrate themselves and recognize the influential women in their lives.
On Saturday, May 10, Girls United will host a color run and walk called “Miles in Her Shoes.” The event will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Spartan High track. A QR code to sign up and purchase tickets is available in the morning announcements. All District 7 schools are invited to celebrate the inspiring women in their lives.

Danielle Tyus (12) has been involved with Girls United throughout high school and has encouraged others to join.
“I have learned the true meaning of sisterhood through empowering each other and being there for each other,” Tyus said.
