Spring is a time of new growth and opportunity – and a time to get back onto the track for the Spartanburg High track and field team. After putting in hard work and dedication in all last season and carrying on into the offseason, the regular competition season is upon them, and they are continuing to make waves in the athletic community.
The team hopes to achieve more than just winning multiple meets this year. The whole team is known for having a great bond and outstanding teamwork. The unbreakable bond between every athlete and every coach could be because of how much time and effort they spend around each other. Athletes meet every day after school to put in more work even after being drained from the school day they had endured before practice.
A’Kyra Webster (11) is one of the top girls track athletes and has learned a lot from her time on the team.
“My experience on the SHS track team has been anything but boring. Being a part of the track team gives me something to look forward to throughout the day, as I find myself ready to go to practice and get better. This year has been a little slow, but still exciting. While my season did not start the best, I’m more than happy with where I am now, and I look forward to becoming a better and faster athlete. I plan to break the school records in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash, whether I do that this year or my senior season,” Webster said.
Torrean Davis (11) has been a Spartan High track athlete for years now and has set high standards for himself and the rest of the team for the remainder of the season.
“My experience at the Nike Indoor Nationals was a very exciting experience for me and my teammates. For me, it was also complicated due to all the training and exercises it took us to get to that point. I’m very happy with the way the team is performing so far this year, and we can do great things. I hope to be the state champion for long jump,” Davis said.
The track and field team at SHS continues the season reaching new heights every single meet. Some notable performances for both the boys and the girls teams took place at the Wood Lowcountry Invitational in Dorchester where the boys were victorious and the girls were second overall. At the Bob Jenkins Coaches Classic District 2 Qualifying Meet in York, the boys were first overall and the girls took third. Both teams have shown early on in the season that they are both able to beat competition at very elite and prestigious stages.
Walker Nunes (12) is a distance runner for the Viking track team and had the opportunity to race at the Nike Indoor Nationals this year.
“I had a lot of fun while we were in New York. Getting to run at one of the most historic tracks in the whole world was a pretty cool experience and getting to experience all of it beside some great teammates,” Nunes said.
The Viking track and field team has always been known for athletic excellence. All of the athletes’ grit and determination to give every meet and every race their all and this is why the team never fails to represent SHS.
