There are few foods more filling and delicious than a classic cheeseburger. A toasted bun, a juicy patty and melted cheese are all factors of a good burger. But where is the best burger in Spartanburg?
Over the years, dozens of burger joints have opened all across the town of Spartanburg, each of them having their unique take on the all-American classic; like the city’s local burger joint Sugar and Spice. Fast food burgers joints such Cook Out, Whataburger and Smalls Sliders each have groups of people who think their burger is the best in the Burg.
One of the newest spots in town is Whataburger which opened in 2024 and quickly became a staple in the Hillcrest Market Place on the East Side. Known for its massive menu, customers have the ability to create 36,864 different burger combinations due to their extensive choice of toppings. Their signature item, the “Whataburger,” features a four-ounce patty stacked on a five-inch bun with mustard, lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. It’s quickly become a favorite for those who like a customizable and filling burger.
Cook Out is another crowd favorite, especially amongst high school students. Its affordable pricing and delicious milkshakes make it a go-to spot for late-night snacks and post-game meals.
Griggs Holmes (10) says that Cook Out is the place he goes to when he wants a burger.
“I love their burgers and fries,” Holmes said. “It’s open really late so no matter what you’re doing you can rely on Cook Out to eat.”
The tiny but mighty, Smalls Sliders has also just recently entered the burger conversation. Their petite yet flavorful sliders come packed with flavor along with their waffle fries and shakes. The burgers aren’t the only thing that is small about this burger joint though. Smalls menu only offers main course options of one, two, three or four sliders, the Biggie Smalls and grilled cheese.
Anna Evans (10) says she first tried Smalls on the opening day and was pleasantly surprised.
“I was blown away with how good it was. I think it is a great addition to Spartanburg, and I will be going back,” Evans said.
With all these new and hot burger spots, it’s easy to forget about the classics. McDonald’s continues to be a favorite of those who want a fast and cheap meal that is also delicious.
Trey Weathers (12) says he loves McDonalds mainly for the speed of their service.
“While it may not be the tastiest burger, I love how quick and convenient it is,” Weathers said.
Ultimately, choosing the best burger joint isn’t just about beef and buns, it’s about the experience. Whether you’re dining in with family, hitting the drive-thru after school or grabbing a bite with friends, each of these places offers their own flavor to Spartanburg.
Go and try them out. Compare the sauces and debate the fries. Drink the milkshakes and eat the ice cream. But at the end of the day, the only real winner is the one who gets to eat.
