School travel helps broaden student education and liven up typically mundane topics.
The Student Council at Spartanburg High School went on a Costa Rica trip in March 2024. The class got the opportunity to research and present ideas for where they should go. After many presentations and votes, they landed on Costa Rica. Student Council adviser Kiley Painter submitted their destination to WorldStrides, a travel company that helped them plan and give quotes for the cost. Once the outline for the trip was complete, the Council introduced the idea to principal Andrew McMillan, and the school board for approval. After the agreement, the students started arranging and fundraising for their trip. The preparation for the trip further taught students how to organize, plan and budget travel.
Nancy Jacobs, a Spanish and French teacher at Spartanburg High, is a strong believer that travel is vital to student growth.
“Traveling is costly, but it is incredibly rewarding and educational. You learn so much about yourself and the world around you,” Jacobs said.
The students on the Spain and France trip in summer 2025 had all been in Spanish and French classes; they studied all year to go on the trip. Students applied their knowledge of a foreign language during this trip.
Resce Youngblood (10) gained new experiences and knowledge of different cultures during his trip.
“It was a great trip with new experiences. It helped me understand different cultures,” Youngblood said.
Being exposed to new and different cultures helps expand student education and diversify student viewpoints. When surrounded by new and rich cultures, young people can pick up certain traditions and lifestyles to carry with them.
Ella Hayes (10) stepped out of her comfort zone during her exciting trip to Europe.
“I took risks in trying new foods that I probably wouldn’t have tried without having set meals provided by our tour guide. Being away from my family across the whole Atlantic Ocean made me become more independent and more comfortable in places I am unfamiliar with and dealing with situations that I would normally just let my family figure out,” Hayes said.
When experimenting with foods, places and social experiences, people can feel out of place. To go on a trip surrounded by your friends and a native tour guide can ease the stress. Something learned by these traveled students is being comfortable with being uncomfortable. Students also attain a tighter grasp on their autonomy.
School trips are essential to children who want a comprehensive education. During school trips, kids learn vital social and navigational skills. They become more independent and confident in themselves when they are forced to problem-solve alone. These extracurricular learning experiences are one of the great opportunities offered in District 7.
