The girls tennis team has had a dominant start to their season, currently holding a 7-1 record. They have become a top contender in the region remaining undefeated and recording shutouts against opponents such as Eastside, Wade Hampton, Boiling Springs and Byrnes High School. While doing so, they have also won against Gaffney and Dorman by a score of 5-1. Success is no stranger to this prestigious program. The girls tennis team is one of the most decorated athletic programs at Spartanburg High School, racking up 12 state championships since its inception.
Mackie Clayton (10) believes playing high school tennis has made her a better player, both mentally and physically.
“I’ve definitely gotten better playing for Spartanburg High School since the team environment motivates me to improve my game,” Clayton said.
The high status of the program was built on dedicated athletes, driven coaches and detailed practice plans to expand the skill level of players. However, the program’s success also comes from the sisterhood that continues to grow on the team. The team has a strong support system where they watch every match their teammates compete in and cheer them on against their opponents. Before away matches, they like to eat snacks and listen to music on the bus to get hyped up before it’s time to play. Outside of practice and matches, they bond by organizing team dinners and taking pictures to capture their memories together.
Mary English Hammett (12) is the captain of the girls tennis team and is grateful for the opportunity to be a leader.
“I love that I am able to be a role model and a representation of our team and the family we have created through tennis,” Hammett said.
Being a part of a program with a respected reputation comes with high standards and ambitious goals. Sportsmanship is implemented in the minds of the players and is executed at every practice and match. They are encouraged to be authentic and kind people on and off the court. The team has a competitive mindset and consistently has a goal of bringing home another state championship.
Myers Brantley (11) has always enjoyed playing tennis and loves competing with a team that is as driven as she is.
“I wanted to join the tennis team for the community, and I love the sport. My goal for this season is to go undefeated in the region and win state,” Brantley said.
