The Spartanburg High School (SHS) boys golf team has started off the season strong, making their way up the scorecard as the spring season progresses. After many good performances last year, the team came into the 2026 season with even higher expectations, and the team has already shown major improvement from last season. The Vikings are keeping the ball rolling as they build momentum moving deeper into the season.
Andrew Winter (11) has been on the golf team for a few years now and is looking forward to the 2026 season.
“We are going to a few good tournaments that will all have some great competition which gives us some great opportunities to compete and keep getting better,” Winter said. “I’m excited to see how the season goes, and I think we can put up some good performances this season.”
One of the biggest reasons for the Vikings’ success out on the course is the amount of work put in during the offseason. Players spent time improving their swings and mechanics, practicing their short game and focusing on consistency. This preparation has helped them stay competitive in matches, even when facing tough opponents or difficult course conditions.
Younger players have also stepped up in a big way. Parker Compton (9) has become one of the most reliable golfers on the team.
“I have had a ton of fun with all the guys on the team whether if it’s just at practice or even during a tournament, we always have a lot of good times while also putting in the work,” Compton said.
A strong point for the Viking golf team is the roster depth. Instead of depending on just one or two players, the Vikings have several golfers who can contribute solid scores. This is key to success when trying to win tournaments as a team, where every stroke counts toward the team’s score.
New to the SHS golf program, Coach Arran Setro, has enjoyed being able to be part of the golf team’s early-on success.
“Emmett Walsh (10), Andrew Winter (11) and Brady Lowry (12) are some of our key returning players. I knew of them from my previous coaching job and knew how much they were an impact last year, and I know they will continue to get better. James Little (9) is new to varsity, but he already is playing a huge role on our team,” Setro said.
As the season continues, Spartanburg is looking ahead to more tournaments and gearing up for the championship portion of the season. With a mix of experienced leaders and plenty of talented younger players, this season has great potential in store for the Vikings.
Setro continues to explain his excitement for the upcoming tournaments for the season.
“Our tournaments are played across the state, but most of our events this year are in the upstate. We have three tournaments in the upstate at the Greenville Country Club, River Falls Country Club and at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club. We also have a tournament in Columbia (Parks Hutto Bengal Invite). Our Upper State is also in Columbia, and the state championship is in Myrtle Beach. It has been a great start to the season, and it helps that we have a lot of quality student-athletes here in Spartanburg District 7,” Setro said.
