Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium recently announced their upcoming Broadway shows for the 2023-2024 season. Starting on November 3, the first Broadway show at the auditorium since 2001, “Chicago,” will be performed. In addition to “Chicago,” the other shows this season include “Magical Cirque Christmas,” “Stomp,” “Mean Girls” and “The Book of Mormon.”
Roslyn Owensby (9) has been involved with school productions and looks forward to seeing the shows.
“Even though I am not involved in these musicals, I would be most excited to see ‘Mean Girls’ because I think seeing the adaptation of it to a smaller stage with younger people would be interesting,” Owensby said.
Madelyn Stevens (11) is looking forward to seeing the ‘Mean Girls’ show with her friends.
“I’m really excited to see ‘Mean Girls’ on Broadway because I love the movie and I think the play adaptation would be very fun and worth going to see,” Stevens said.
These shows represent a new chapter for the auditorium since they typically only showcase country or rock concerts. Ever since Broadway left the auditorium in 2001, Spartanburg Memorial has had a limited number of shows each year that were all similar in style. With new employees at the auditorium such as Lindsay Drakulic, the Director of Marketing, the team has managed to bring their hope of Broadway in Spartanburg to life.
Spartanburg Memorial is just now catching up with Greenville’s auditorium, The Peace Center, where Broadway shows have been put on since 2015. Many residents of Spartanburg are thrilled for the shows to become more local since they have been to Broadway shows at The Peace Center.
Anne Caroline Greer (11) travels to Greenville almost every month to watch these performances.
“Me and my mom have been going to The Peace Center ever since I was little, and it has become a tradition in my family. When me and my mom found out about Broadway shows being available in Spartanburg, we immediately looked into buying tickets,” Greer said.
The ticket prices for the shows are reasonably cheap and range from $23- $68. They also offer a holiday mini package which includes tickets to three shows, “Stomp,” “Mean Girls” and “The Book of Mormon” for $100. Although these three shows will be in 2024, the auditorium hopes this package will make the perfect holiday gift for Broadway lovers.
If one misses the shows this year, there is no need to worry because Broadway will be returning for the 2024-2025 season and many more years to come. The auditorium will officially announce the return of Broadway next summer along with a list of the upcoming shows. This re-introduction of Broadway makes the auditorium more likely to feature popular artists and acts more often throughout the year.
