As people open their closets, ready to pick out another perfect outfit for their day, they become overwhelmed by an abundance of choices. Staring at clothes bought due to a trend that quickly faded, people look back into their closet of previous fashion decisions and cringe. One way that fashion enthusiasts have decided to combat this problem is by creating the perfect capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential clothing items that withstand the test of time and fluctuation of trends. A capsule wardrobe includes up to twenty clothing items, giving one a small selection of tops, jackets, outer layers, shoes and accessories. All the items mostly being in neutral hues. Kelly Olson, a stylist at Nordstrom, is a prolific supporter of capsule wardrobes because of their sustainability.
“By having fewer pieces that all coordinate, you can utilize every article of clothing you have,” Olson said to nordstrom.com.
However, according to medium.com, a capsule wardrobe takes more creativity and imagination to build an outfit that is not appealing to many who are just looking for an easy fashion statement.
Ruthie Kimsey (11) enjoys fashion and experimenting with new trends but has some reservations about the flexibility of capsule wardrobes.
“I like the sustainability of capsule wardrobes, but I think it might be harder to put together outfits and you would end up wearing the same outfits all the time,” Kimsey said.
Rachel Owensby is a supporter of capsule wardrobes because of the space and time they save.
“I think capsule wardrobes are more helpful to people because they have all the basics you could need to put together multiple outfits. They are also space saving because you don’t have as many clothes to try and shove into a closet or dresser and they save people time trying to put together outfits,” Owensby said.
