The Spartanburg Vikings and the Dorman Cavaliers are known for being annual ambitious rivals. The rivalry began in 1965, and both teams have remained fierce competitors ever since. Due to the close proximity between the two schools, the unique competitiveness between the opponents has created the motivation for success each year.
Caroline Byers (11) thinks the Dorman and Spartanburg rivalry is important to all Vikings.
“The Dorman vs Spartanburg High School rivalry is important to me because it makes the whole school feel connected and lots of fun things happen during the week of Dorman vs SHS, which makes it exciting and interesting for the students to be involved in,” Byers said.
In recent years, the annual meeting of the Vikes and the Cavs on the football field has been centered around the “Think Pink!” week, which raises money for breast cancer awareness. Student Council pumps up the entire school with a week of dress-up days and other festivities.
The intense game against Dorman infuses the air with energy and excitement, uniting students, staff and alumni in a desire for victory. The rivalry creates a unifying force that gives a sense of pride in Spartanburg High School and an opportunity to showcase talents beyond the classroom. Additionally, the competition pushes students to strive for greatness, to continually improve, and to embrace challenges head-on. This impactful tradition brings students together and strengthens the commitment to being a part of the Viking family.
Jackson Pingley (9) feels it is a crucial part in being a Viking.
“The Spartanburg/Dorman rivalry is important to me because it proves who is the best between the East and West at football. The rivalry is a special experience is to me because no matter how good either team is, both teams are going to show out and it’s going to be a great game,” Pingley said.
