One way that Spartanburg High School students have shown their Viking spirit is by dressing up in a variety of creative themes. These special days were widely accepted by students with a countless number pouring into the entrances of the school in wacky outfits each day.
The dress-up festivities began for Homecoming Week following the board game-themed dance. Students started their week off with “Country versus Country Club,” featuring students dressed in their nicest polos and others in their cowboy boots and flannels. Tuesday’s theme of “Anything but a Backpack” had students bring in incredibly creative items such as a television box and even a car bumper.
Brody O’Brien (12) brought his rolling popcorn machine to school to celebrate anything but a backpack day.
“I was trying to blow everyone else’s items away with my anything but a backpack idea. The wheels on the popcorn machine are decorative so I had one fall off on my way to second period,” O’Brien said.
Wednesday, on theme with that afternoon’s parade, students dressed according to their grade level’s board game with freshmen dressing in accordance with Jumanji, sophomores with Monopoly, juniors with Operation, and seniors with Candyland. Thursday also had students dress according to their grade with freshmen dressing as babies, sophomores as teens, juniors as middle-age, and seniors as senior citizens. Homecoming Week ended with students dressing in extreme blue and gold to both school and the Homecoming football game against Gaffney.
Only a couple weeks later, the dress-up festivities continued during the Think Pink Week leading to the Dorman football game. The week began with a special exception to the dress code in the form of pajama day, bringing students to school in their comfiest nightwear. It continued to rhyme without reason, bringing students together in rhyming pairs.
Dorothy Salley (12) paired with Anna Beeson (12) for their unique rhyme without reason outfit.
“Anna and I went as Darth Vader and cheese grater, and I thought that we did a great job. Tons more people dressed up than I thought they would, and I loved seeing it,” Salley said.
Wednesday brought another versus, dueling tropical attire with winter garments.
Nearing the end of the week, Throwback Thursday led to creative styles from the past. Think Pink Week came to a close with pink out in both school and that evening’s Dorman football game.
