Every year, football fans watch as their team attempts to succeed throughout the season to earn the privilege of playing for one of the most coveted sports event in history, the Super Bowl. Super Bowl LVIII will kick off on Feb. 11, in Las Vegas, and sports enthusiasts are on edge to see who will come through with the victory. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will be battling it out on the turf for another Lombardi Trophy to etch their names in football history. The tradition of the Super Bowl has been around for over 57 years (this year the 58th). The celebration of the Super Bowl is very popular, especially in the United States where friends and family gather to watch the spectacle every year.
Human Geography teacher and football coach, Grey Ramsey, loves to celebrate the extravagant event with friends and family and thinks the Super Bowl itself has turned into one of the greatest American traditions of all.
“The Super Bowl is one of the best events that we have every year in this country. It has become an opportunity for friends and family to gather together and fellowship. It seems like the game itself has become secondary to the festivities of the day and evening. I typically celebrate the Super Bowl by gathering with friends to enjoy lots of great food and entertainment. The Super Bowl is an event that seems to bring people together. Whether it’s the commercials or the halftime show, the Super Bowl has turned into a great American tradition,” Ramsey said.
Typically, if someone is asked what their favorite part of the Super Bowl may be, their answer might be the game itself or celebrating their team’s victory following the game. Others would think that the Super Bowl’s halftime show is the best part about watching the game. Ever since the first Super Bowl, fan’s eyes have been drawn to the gridiron while the players are in the locker room to watch the famous halftime show. For the 2024 Super Bowl, R&B star, Usher, has earned the privilege to perform this year. Usher also had a previous halftime show performance appearance in 2011 at Super Bowl XLV in Arlington, Texas.
Da’Keriyon Gossett (10) says the halftime show during the Super Bowl is an entertaining and fun way to attract viewers.
“The halftime show is usually pretty entertaining, especially if they have a good performance that a lot of people like,” Gossett said.
Watching the Super Bowl means people will run into commercials or ads everywhere. The Super Bowl is one of the most viewed sports events, with over 100 million people watching; therefore, advertisements are a good way for brands and companies to gain publicity. Sources say that during the four-hour-long viewing, over 50 minutes of those are designated commercials and ad breaks.
Wynn Story (9) thinks that the hundreds of companies that promote their products during the Super Bowl are a great way to get viewers interested in products.
“Showing advertisements during big sports events that a lot of people are watching especially since the Super Bowl will obviously get a lot of attention to their product they want to advertise,” Story said.
With all the football festivities in full swing coming into early February, the hype for the largest football and American sports event is growing every day to see who wins this year’s Super Bowl.
