For each issue of Movie Mayhem, George Proctor (12) and Ariella Garrell (11) will choose two movies pertaining to the season to compare. With the season of love quickly approaching, they chose a couple of romantic comedies to fit the passionate atmosphere.
George’s pick: “The Proposal”
For my pick of a romantic comedy, I decided to go with “The Proposal,” released in 2009. The movie stars Sandra Bullock playing Margaret Tate, a conceited, hateful editor-in-chief of a newspaper agency, and Ryan Reynolds playing Andrew Paxton, Margaret’s assistant. In order to avoid deportation to Canada, Margaret forces Tate into an illegal marriage with the possibility of imprisoning both of them. The couple embarks on a trip to Andrew’s hometown to tell his family about the engagement and solidify their marriage as genuine.
As a big fan of this genre, this movie has entered my list of favorites alongside movies such as “10 Things I Hate About You” and “Set It Up.” This movie’s fun, playful tone contrasted with Bullock’s cold performance and was incredibly fun to watch. I would suggest this movie to anyone wanting to get into the romantic spirit for Valentine’s Day.
Ariella’s pick: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”
For this issue of Movie Mayhem, my choice is the famed movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” This fan-favorite rom-com released in 2003 follows the love story of Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) and Benjamin Barry (Mathew McConaughey). As part of a plan to write an article for her magazine, Andie plans to find a guy to date but drive him away with all the classic red flags. Simultaneously, Benjamin makes a bet with his coworkers that he can make a girl fall in love with him in 10 days. Eventually, their plans collide, and they start dating, but 10 days later they both find out about each other’s schemes. After quitting her job and pursuing, he dream of political journalism, Andie leaves to move to Washington D.C. Right before she leaves forever, Ben chases her down and convinces her to stay, ending their rollercoaster of a love story on a high.
“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” perfectly exemplifies the classic rom-com. Hudson and McConaughey’s chemistry throughout the movie makes their love very believable. This movie is filled with many memorable moments that people still quote today. One of its most adored scenes featuring Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain” is iconic to the movie and adds in a hilarious musical aspect where both lead characters sing. Whether it’s the creative plot, witty jokes or exciting romance, this movie is for anyone wanting a good laugh or a love story.
Between “The Proposal” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” which movie are you watching for the season of love?
