As the Spartanburg High boys’ varsity baseball team enters a new season, players and fans alike eagerly await the outcomes of the year, with great hope of being successful. The players have made significant progress in fostering a culture of unity, determination and sportsmanship. These qualities are the cornerstone of what the SHS baseball program is all about.
Taylor Jeter (12) is a baseball player who values every moment spent throughout the years with his team.
“Being on the baseball team has created some of the best memories and best times of my life with the guys that I love. My favorite part about being on the team has been just being able to compete and get after it with my guys every day whether it’s in the weight room, in practice or a game. In my opinion, we’ve got the best coaches that truly want to see us succeed and have fun while playing the game,” Jeter said.
Before the season officially started on February 29, the Vikings played a scrimmage against Landrum, dominating with a final score of 14-1. Starting the season off strong, the Vikings were victorious in their first tournament of the season, winning their first game against A.C. Flora High School with a score of 3-2, and an 8-4 win against North Augusta High School. As the season progresses, the team is poised for more intense matchups, focusing on refining their strategies and sharpening their skills.
Varsity head coach Jesse Dyar is anxious to start a fresh season and is excited about what the future holds for them.
“(I’m) really looking forward to the 2024 baseball season. Looking ahead, I believe our season holds great promise. With each game, our players are honing their skills and strengthening their teamwork. However, there’s always room for improvement. We’re focusing on fine-tuning our strategies, enhancing our communication on the field, and elevating our mental game. As we continue to grow and evolve, I have no doubt that our Spartanburg baseball family will achieve great things,” Dyar said.
Within the baseball Viking family, the focus is on instilling values of discipline, perseverance and respect in the players. An important aspect that is stressed to the young athletes is the idea of teaching life lessons that extend far beyond the baseball diamond. The Vikings are set to continue their pursuit of baseball excellence, making every game a step toward achieving their goals.
Player Hugh Hayes (12) is beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something special and is excited for what is to come this year.
“Just being able to play the game of baseball with my teammates is great. I love the coaching staff and all the players, and I am just ready to make a run this year,” Hayes said.
