At Spartanburg High School, advanced chorus students have the opportunity to join Corporation. In this program, students have several fundraiser concerts throughout the year, including a scholarship fundraiser which will help senior Corporation members pay for college.
The concert took place on Feb. 17, and had a few special numbers with middle school choir students who are on the road to become the next generation of Corporation members. This single concert collected a grand total of $2,585 for the Choir Booster Club’s scholarship fund, which will be given to Corporation seniors at their final concert on April 30.
Kimberly Colon is the choir teacher and director of Corporation.
“These students are some of our strongest musicians and have demonstrated a high level of musical skill, vocal talent and leadership. We tour the elementary schools and other venues within the Spartanburg community as representatives of our student body,” Colon said.
During the concert, almost every member had a solo, on top of duets, trios and whole group number performances. The concert featured memorable acts such as “I’m Just Ken,” performed by the male members of the program. One sentimental trio was performed by two seniors, Keira Chanthavongrsor and Chassidy Jeter, and by junior, Rachel Owensby, in which seniors Chanthavongrsor and Jeter passed their leadership roles on to Owensby.
Keira Chanthavongsor is the president of Corporation and has thoroughly enjoyed her time practicing and performing amongst her friends.
“Throughout the year, we learn popular and well-known songs, and we work together to find ways on how to entertainingly perform it – either through choreography, just sitting and swaying, etc. We perform at choir concerts, around the community and at our own show. We truly support, appreciate and love each other so much. Corporation is not just a great class, but a great family,” Chanthavongsor said.
To be in the Corporation, one must audition, have good grades and an exceptional talent for singing. On the stage, audience members will see senior class president, Zion Littlejohn (12), and senior class vice president, Micah Kennedy (12) among the many other multi-talented and involved performers. Throughout the year, the members tour District 7 elementary schools, the Piedmont Club and Rotary Club to promote the program.
Zion Littlejohn has enjoyed performing for the District 7 elementary schools, especially since he is a Teacher Cadet serving at E.P. Todd Elementary.
“Being in Corporation is a great experience because we have fun together and get to show off all of our hard work at our two shows at the end of the year. I will never forget the friendships and experiences I’ve made along the way,” Littlejohn said.
