Having a sibling can be very special. Whether it’s an older sister to look up to or a little brother to mess with, a sibling bond is unlike any other. But there is one type of sibling duo that is extra special: twins. For many years, twins have been a topic of discussion, being written about in newspapers or portrayed in movies. Throughout history, twin telepathy, one of the most intriguing concepts concerning twins, has been a subject of extensive study.
The two types of twins are fraternal twins and identical twins. While fraternal twins have a unique appearance and DNA, identical twins share identical features and DNA. One phenomenon seen among identical twins is the supposed twin telepathy. This strange trait among identical twins can be seen when twins finish each other’s sentences or are just thinking the same thing.
Ava Fleifel (11), a twin at Spartanburg High School, says that she and her sister have first-hand experience with twin telepathy.
“My twin and I have definitely experienced twin telepathy. One time Mya was telling me something about a show randomly, and I was going tell her that same thing at that moment,” Fleifel said.
While there is no scientific evidence behind twin telepathy, it has become a well-known occurrence.
According to Benjamin Radford of “Live Science,” twin telepathy can be attributed to twins’ close connection throughout their lives, and their shared experiences may bring them psychologically closer.
“Any two people who know each other very well and who have shared many common experiences — including non-twin siblings, old married couples, and even best friends — may complete each other’s sentences and laugh at inside jokes that leave outsiders baffled,” Radford said.
One defining part of being a twin is finding one’s own identity. Some twins like to embrace their identicalness by dressing similarly, like the Olsen twins, famous for acting in “Full House.” Other twins like to branch out and create their own identity like actors Dylan and Cole Sprouse.
Kennedy Woodruff (12) says that she and her twin Logan are similar in some ways, but very different in others. Although they are different, she thinks that their differences are what bring them together.
“Logan and I are identical mirror twins so we look similar and we share some of the same mannerisms, however, this is where our similarities end. We are like fire and ice. In our family, I am the person who supplies the logical answer to situations, and Logan gives an emotional outlook,” Woodruff said. “Some people say she is more open, energetic and friendly, and I am more reserved and relaxed. But her energy and my calmness cancel out. I like to think we would have created the perfect person if we did not separate.”
