With decades of fundraisers and fun activities over the years such as the annual Homecoming celebration, Kidz In Lids and Powderpuff football, Student Council prides itself on motivating students and encouraging school spirit at SHS.
Student Council has a number of members who are involved in various ways across the campus, and with many team members, there must be a focus on good chemistry, communication and relationships. An idea proposed earlier this year by members of Student Council was to have a trip for teambuilding. After this approval, Spartanburg High’s Student Council is off to Costa Rica.
Anna Beeson (12) is the student body president at Spartanburg High School and supports the idea of the trip.
“We wanted to take a trip to build our relationships with each other and to give everyone a chance to explore a new part of the world,” Beeson said.
Ava Hrysikos (10) is also a member of Student Council and thinks the trip will be a great opportunity.
“The educational tour will build upon the things I’m learning about in school, while introducing me to exciting new destinations and cultures,” Hrysikos said.
After hearing from members of Student Council, the trip has been in the works for a while now and students are thrilled about their opportunity to build upon friendships and teamwork while on the fun filled trip. Students going on the trip will fly out of Charlotte, N.C., on Friday, March 15, at 5:35 am. They will return home on March 23, at around 3 pm. There are 10 students who are attending, along with 4 adult chaperones.
The trip will be beneficial to the students attending not just for learning and gaining knowledge of Costa Rican culture, but students attending the trip will also gain high school credit hours while there on the trip.
Spanish teacher Kiley Painter, who also serves as Student Council adviser, wants the trip to be fun and exciting for those who are going, but she also is encouraging them to build trust with each other and learn a lot.
“The tour around Costa Rica will help students be introduced to new cultures and destinations. Our focus is also team building and trust since we will be participating in multiple activities together such as ziplining, kayaking and horseback riding. The students will be able to get school credit hours for attending the trip and doing coursework after,” Painter said.
