After being closed to the public, Duncan Park Lake is finally open for catch-and-release fishing and non-motorized boating. The long-awaited reopening has the local community filled with anticipation.
Nahomy Salazar (10) learns about the news and is ready to go fishing.
“That was great news to hear. I will spend that time so much differently now that I can fish at Duncan Park. I am so excited because I get to go fishing with my dad and my brothers.” Salazar said.
The 14-acre lake was closed to the public in the 1950s due to no relevant neighborhood concerns. But thanks to the efforts of the local organization Play Advocate Live Well (PAL), the lake has been revitalized and is now accessible to the community once again.
Silas Crosland (11) explains why he looks forward to fishing at Duncan Park.
“I believe that the legalization of fishing at Duncan Park will benefit the community because it gives teens something to do outside,” Crosland said.
In addition to the restored access, the lake teems with largemouth bass, providing many opportunities for avid anglers. Spartanburg’s Department of Natural Resources recently surveyed the fish population, giving the green light for catch-and-release fishing.
Travis Hill (10) has been to Duncan Park and is eager to hear about the legalization of fishing.
“Fishing at Duncan Park would be fun. Knowing that I could have the opportunity to fish there is exciting news,” Hill said.
While swimming is not allowed due to the lake’s stagnancy, visitors are welcome to fish from the shore, dock, or their own non-motorized boats. The city has also made four kayaks available for rent through a mobile app, making it easier than ever to get out on the water.
With its prime location just minutes from downtown Spartanburg, Duncan Park Lake is set to become a hub of summertime activity and recreation for residents of all ages. The reopening marks a thrilling new chapter for this long-overlooked community asset.
