Caroline Byers (12) appreciates the fun and fellowship that the Greek Festival brings to Spartanburg.
“I have always loved watching the dancing because my cousins used to dance in the festival when they were little and it has always been a tradition in our family to go Saturday night of the festival,” Byers said.
Students can volunteer in various roles, including helping with food preparation and setting up booths. Volunteering enhances the festival experience and allows students to gain valuable skills and build their resumes. The festival features a range of cultural activities that students can attend. Attending these activities gives students a deeper appreciation for the culture and understanding its significance.
John Rubio (12) has always been engaged in the festival as a participant.
“I’ve been practically attending always participating in the Greek festival for as long as I can remember. It has been a wonderful experience volunteering there and helping any way I can. Even though it takes out a whole weekend to volunteer it is truly worth it making the memories and having a blast. I have also danced there for many many years and I can just say that it’s a pretty awesome experience volunteering and helping at the Greek Festival, ” Rubio said.
The festival often includes workshops on Greek crafts and arts, allowing students to express their creativity and learn new skills. These hands-on experiences can be fun and educational, offering insights into Greece’s artistic traditions.
One of the highlights of the Greek Festival is undoubtedly the food. People attending the festival can indulge in authentic Greek dishes, such as moussaka, souvlaki, spanakopita and baklava. For students, this is an opportunity to enjoy delicious cuisine and learn about the significance of these dishes within Greek culture.
Madelyn Stephens (12) expressed her anticipation for the festival’s food offerings.
“I love going to the Greek Festival every year and the food has to be my favorite part. Some of my favorites are the souvlaki platter with rice, green beans, and spanakopitas which are essentially spinach pies. The food is always so seasoned and has to be one of the best types of food out there,” Stephens said.
The Greek Festival is more than just a cultural event. It is a chance for students to connect with the community. Students can meet residents, business owners and fellow students by attending the event. The festival fosters relationships that may extend beyond the festival itself.
