From the big dance to the parade, dress-up days, and football game under the lights, every Homecoming celebration at SHS is always a time to remember. This year’s exciting theme for Homecoming was centered around the magical world of Disney. The Homecoming Dance, which kicked off the weeklong celebration, was Disney’s Princess and the Frog.
Dress-up days included “Monsters University” day, where students and teachers wore their favorite college attire; “Sleeping Beauty” day, which featured pajamas; Disney Duo day, where Vikings dressed as their favorite Disney pairs. Class Day was another fun event, with freshmen theme of the movie “Up;” sophomores represented “101 Dalmatians;” juniors dressed as the “Lion King;” and seniors showcased “Moana.” The parade, as usual, had all the classes participate in making their floats. The parade marched around campus with people cheering, and school spirit was through the roof with the Viking blue and gold decorations.
Homecoming was a long few weeks overdue, thanks to the inclement weather of Hurricane Helene which forced postponement on the dance and festivities. The Viking football team initially was supposed to play the Gaffney Indians for the annual Homecoming game; however, the game was also postponed to later in the season. Ultimately, the Vikings played Boiling Springs for their Homecoming game. The football team was victorious with an outstanding performance to beat the Bulldogs 27-7.
One thing that is often overlooked is what goes into putting on the dance and festivities every single year. SHS’s Student Council is responsible for working hard to make sure students have fun during this special time of the year.
Ava Hrysikos (11) is a member of Student Council and had fun behind the scenes.
“A lot of planning and discussions go on with the overall festivities of Homecoming. A lot of choices and revising plans were made. A lot of hard work contributed by House of Representatives and Senate going into creating floats, preparing decorations and working the parade,” Hrysikos said.
Students spent their Homecoming night dancing to blaring music, extravagant decorations and lights, and during the dance, the 2024 Homecoming King was announced. Seth Miller (12) was named this year’s king. During the Homecoming football game against Boiling Springs, this year’s queen, Kamryn Sainvil (12) was announced in front of a full stadium.
Mac Hanna (9) went to the Homecoming dance and had a great time.
“This year was my first Homecoming dance, and my friends and I had a ton of fun listening to music and going to the football game,” Hanna said.
Crosby Cooper (10) had fun all Homecoming week with all the festivities and the excitement the events brought.
“I had a ton of fun with my friends doing the dress-up days, the dance and being at the football game. I thought this year’s dance was so much fun,” Cooper said.
Homecoming week 2024 was surely a time to remember – from the hurricane wrecking the schedule to the fun festivities that Student Council brought to the table. Vikings will never forget this magical moment in time.
