Many years ago, during Spartanburg High’s men’s basketball games, a spirited group of students emerged—known as the Bleacher Creatures. These students didn’t just attend the games; they became a crucial part of the atmosphere, helping propel the team to victory. The gymnasium would buzz with excitement as the Bleacher Creatures, dressed in creative and themed costumes, united in their passion for both basketball and school spirit. Whether it was a rivalry game or an important playoff matchup, the Bleacher Creatures made their presence known. But over time, this beloved tradition faded away. So, what happened to this unique student section?
The last known mention of the Bleacher Creatures came on Jan. 7, 2020, when Spartanburg High’s student council Instagram account encouraged students to wear their “craziest Bleacher Creature outfit” to a basketball game. But that call to action didn’t seem to spark the revival many had hoped for. What changed?
One theory comes from Knox Eaton (12) who believes the decline of the Bleacher Creatures is tied to two key events: the transition to a new school and the impact of COVID-19.
“I think it went away because of the transition to a new school and COVID-19 halting most sports right around the same time,” Eaton said. “I think it should come back because it shows support for the basketball team and gets the crowd excited about the game.”
Eaton’s theory echoes a larger shift in school culture, where new priorities and circumstances, like virtual learning and social distancing, took hold. But for many, the Bleacher Creatures’ absence has left a void in the student section, one that could be filled with just a bit of effort and enthusiasm.
Zac Rich, head coach of the varsity boys’ basketball team, has heard countless stories about the Bleacher Creatures’ impact on games. He too would love to see the tradition revived.
“As a coach, with some of our biggest games coming up, it would be huge to bring back the Bleacher Creatures,” Rich said. “I’ve heard about how great the Spartanburg student section used to be and how they could impact the game with their energy. With home games against Dorman, Byrnes and Eastside (for senior night), the Bleacher Creatures making a comeback would be a massive boost for our program and school. Show up, be loud, and go Vikings.”
The energy the Bleacher Creatures once brought to Spartanburg High basketball games is something that former students still fondly remember. Brant Goodwin, a member of the Spartanburg High School Class of 1999 and former student body president, recalls how the Bleacher Creatures were an integral part of the game experience.
“I loved seeing a large gathering of fans, friends, and family, but I got hyped and focused for the game when the Bleacher Creatures made their grand entrance,” Goodwin said. “You never knew what creative costume or chant they were going to unveil. They created a fun atmosphere, amping up the crowd, stirring up laughter, distracting the opposing team, cheering on the Mighty Vikings, and staying on top of the referees. They always provided great entertainment and a memorable experience.”
Today, both current and former students agree: the Bleacher Creatures brought an electric energy to Spartanburg High basketball games, and they believe it could make a real difference if revived. With home games against strong rivals and the potential for a school-wide movement, there’s hope that this tradition can rise again and give Spartanburg High’s basketball program the fan support it deserves.
