Dr. Cedrek McFadden, a colon and general surgeon from Greenville, South Carolina, is set to join the cast of “Survivor” season 48, which premieres on Feb. 26, 2025. McFadden is eager to test his resilience, strategic thinking and adaptability in one of television’s most challenging reality competitions.
At 46 years old, McFadden was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. His passion for medicine led him to graduate with honors from Xavier University of Louisiana. He then earned his medical degree at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his residency in general surgery at the Greenville Health System. Today, he is a board-certified surgeon and serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.
Ash Haggerty (12) recalled another local connection to the show and shared her thoughts on the skills necessary for the game.
“I didn’t know someone from around here was going to compete again, but I know Jaime Dugan competed early on and went to Spartanburg High School with my dad,” Haggerty said.
With a background in high-stakes decision-making, teamwork and problem-solving, McFadden is no stranger to pressure. He believes that his years of experience in surgery have prepared him well for the unpredictable and intense environment of “Survivor.”
“I think that basic survival skills are necessary, like being able to hunt and gather and start a fire, as well as teamwork skills,” Haggerty said.
A long-time fan of the show, McFadden has often wondered how he would fare in the game. In a pre-season interview, he shared that competing on “Survivor” is an opportunity to push himself beyond his comfort zone. His motivation extends beyond simply winning; it’s also about personal growth and self-discovery. Many fans of “Survivor” are excited to see how McFadden will perform.
Charlotte Ward (11) expressed her enthusiasm for the show.
“I used to watch it all the time with my mom and dad. I love that show so much; it’s so entertaining, and it’s on my bucket list to go on the show at some point in my life,” Ward said. “To win, you need to blindside people, form alliances, and have a good strategy. I can almost guarantee I wouldn’t make it to the end because I am too kind and loyal and wouldn’t feel comfortable betraying people’s trust, even for the prize money.”
“Survivor” season 48 features a diverse cast of contestants, including athletes, entrepreneurs, teachers and public service workers. McFadden’s ability to remain calm under pressure, along with his analytical skills, might give him an advantage in challenges that involve puzzles, endurance and strategic gameplay.
Seth Miller (12), a fan of the show, has even thought about applying.
“I would maybe apply, although it is a big-time commitment. You need to have survival skills and manipulation skills to win. I think I would win, honestly,” Miller said.
McFadden’s participation in “Survivor” has gained attention from his colleagues, students and the Greenville community, all of whom are eager to see how he applies his knowledge and experience to the competition. Regardless of whether he wins the title of Sole Survivor, his journey on the show is sure to inspire others. Be sure to tune in to CBS on Feb. 26, 2025, to watch this local “celebrity” take on the ultimate survival challenge.
